My Experience at Louisiana State University

Name:  Jenish P. Tandel

Country: Valsad, Gujarat; India

Year: Freshman, class of 2022

School: Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Major: Animal Sciences, Pre-Vet Concentration

Q. Why did you choose Louisiana State University?

A. Because of the opportunities in my field. I want to be a veterinarian specializing in exotic pets and LSU vet students take care of Mike the Tiger [the university mascot] and other exotic animals like birds and reptiles, so it was a chance for hands-on experience. LSU Vet School is also a leader in the field; it was the first to create a transgenic clone goat. In addition to that, the online research I did and the people I spoke to confirmed for me it was great school.

Q. What was your biggest fear or worry about studying in the United States, and what did you find when you arrived?

A. I worried whether I would fit in. But as soon as I arrived, I met with three LSU Global staff. They were friendly and welcoming and made me feel at home. After that, all my fears did not exist anymore.

Q. What’s the best part of studying in the United States?

A. The opportunity for a lot of different experiences. At home, universities focus on academics. Here you have a balance of studying and extra-curricular activities like the football environment, sports and clubs. It’s a broader, fuller college experience.

Q. What’s the hardest part?

A. The hardest part is the fact that I am away from my family.

Q. What’s the coolest thing you’ve done or learned?

A. I ate Louisiana’s amazing crawfish!

I have also learnt how friendly the culture is. Five out of 10 people on the street say hi or smile at you. I find that people are more open. They communicate more clearly and are willing to help you out. It’s very welcoming.

Q. What advice would you give incoming students?

A. I would tell incoming students not to worry. You are in for an experience of a lifetime. The people here are amazing, friendly and caring. You will feel like this is your second home.

Don’t miss…

Eating crawfish! They are delicious.

Seeing your state’s capitol. The view from the top of Louisiana’s is amazing.
